Delhi 6-AR Rahman

Delhi 6 is Rahman’s latest offering to music lovers in India.

Aarti is a purely situational track as it is nothing more than a pious bhajan even as Arziyan is a sufi bhajan. Both sound pristine especially the latter.Bhor Bayi by Shreya Ghoshal and Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan is a treat for classical lovers as it is an out and out Hindustani track.Again situational.Hey Kaala Bandar and Delhi 6 come with a funky and zingy rhythm and fall into the Pappu Can’t Dance Saala mould.Masakalli is eminently listenable for its unconventional tune structure and singing.Rahman deserves applause for his choice of singer(Mohit Chauhan) who sounds incredibly naughty.Dil Gira Dafatan has a haunting guitar strumming in the background even as the singing is breathtaking. The singer Ash King almost sounds like Javed Ali but is outrageously talented as he lands the high notes with clockwork precision.Genda Phool begins like a folk song but takes a wicked turn at around the 50 secondsand turns into a thumping quasi techno song.Rehna Tu is the coup de grace as Rahman takes centrestage concocting a memorable tune and singing it mighty effectively. His husky vocals are pitch perfect for a song of this kind. The album comes to an end with Noor rendered by Amitabh Bacchan.

Rahman comes up with an enchanting score for Delhi 6 as he offers a bouquet of good songs on the platter.Every song sounds elegant and there is something for everyone in the album.Rahman betters himself when compared to Rang De Basanti

My Picks-Dil Gira Dafatan,Masakalli

Rating-Three Cheers!!!

Revised Rating-Four Cheers!!!!

Konchem Ishtam Konchem Kashtam-Shankar Ehsaan Loy

Shankar Ehsaan and Loy the musical trio who rocked the music scene with Rock On make their foray into regional music and have come up with their score for Konchem Ishtam Konchem Kashtam.

Egire has attitude written all over it be it the blaring electronic guitar riffs or the accented vocals of Raman Mahadevan. The track is energetic and sounds cool.Anandama sounds melodious due to the well nuanced rendition by Shankar Mahadevan.Abacha is banal and stale and is marred due to the bad tune. The title track Konchem Ishtam Konchem Kashtam is bouncy and groovy and is sung  brilliantly by Shankar himself.Evade Subramanyam sounds  funny when the singer repeats the hook but the rest of the song has nothinggreat to write home about.Sonu Nigam tiptoes his way through Anta Siddanga. His discomfort in singing telugu is apparent as he never settles into the song. The tune itself is not bad and leaving out the bad pronunciation it gives a good account of itself.Unnikrishnan sounds dreary in the middling Enduku Chentaki. The song begins well but loses its way in the middle. Panchirey has a great energy to it especially when the male singer enters the scene and keeps the flag flying  for the soundtrack. It is a high octane song that just about makes a mark.

Overall SEL dish out above average stuff in KIKK.

My Picks-Anandama,Konchem Ishtam Konchem Kashtam

Rating-Three Cheers!!

Billu Barber-Pritam

Pritam’s latest album reviewed…

Love Mera Hit Hit has the trademark Pritam sound-its rythmic, catchy and oozes exuberance in the vocals of Neeraj Sridhar.Tulsi Kumar surprises with a neat rendition. The breathless energy makes this a foot tapping song.

Ae Aa O sung by KK seems to be the intro song of SRK with some helicopter sounds thrown in the background. With a heavy metallic sound the song will be lapped up by rock lovers. The electronic guitar blares throughout creating an imposing sound-the right feel for an intro song.It would be more enhanced on screen for sure.

Marjaani sung by Sukhwinder ‘Haule Haule’ Singh and Sunidhi is similar in the arrangements department to Mauja Hi Mauja from Jab We Met.This one has appealing backgrounds and my intuition says they are by KK.Lyrics are by Gulzar and it shows. They are poetic in feel and the treatment by Pritam is up to the mark.

You Get Me Rockin n Reelin, again sung by Neeraj Sridhar brings down the pace down after three heavy duty numbers. This one has a meandering tune and has been done up in hip hop style.A Passable number.

Now we move into the rural ambience of Billu Barber……

Billo Bhayankar has a funny sounding Ajay Jhingaran,Raghavendra and Kalpana singing it.The song’s success hinges on how it is treated in the movie. It would appeal to folk lovers.

Jaoon Kahan is the mandatory heartbreak song thrown in to complete the gamut. It most probably would feature a languishing Irfan Khan-dejected,lonely.You get the feeling??? Sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan the tune is refreshing as Pritam here experiments with some new instruments and comes up with astonishing results.Lyrics are as expected very good coming from Sayeed Quadri.A heartfelt song indeed.

Khudaya Khair for me is the crowning glory of the entire album.Though similar in feel to Rockin n Reelin it is better paced and is interesting and absorbing. One can attribute this to the less heard but amazing Soham.Pritam gets the rural atmosphere bang on target and his addition of the female vocals adds impetus to the track.Highly Recommended.

With that we come to the end of Billu Barber. The songs are highly appealing and absorbing but nothing path breaking.Pritam dishes out his trademark sound with elan.

My Picks-Khudaya Khair,Jaoon Kahan,Love Mera Hit Hit

Rating-Three Cheers!!!

Rahman’s recognition

Rahman finally gets his due for his out of the world score for Slumdog. As soon

as the music was out I heard whispers of Rahman maybe getting an Oscar. Now

that he has won the Golden Globe,he has the Oscar within striking range.

For those of you who haven’t yet listened to the OST

it is high time you laid your hands on the album.Rahman truly stuns in this one though one may argue he had done far better ones.

A cheer from this Rehmaniac

Dev D-Amit Trivedi

The first thing you notice as soon as you get your hands on the CD are the humongous number of tracks in the OST.Amit Trivedi for the uninitiated was a relatively less known musician who composed ad jingles and commercials shot into national consciousness(Ok I’m hyping it here) with his debut in Aamir.Aamir was more a theme album with outlandish and extraordinary sounds. Here in Dev D Amit Trivedi gets commercial yet retains his identity as an exciting talent who is redefining the borders of hindi music.Lets get down with the review…

Ankh Micholi is sung by Amit himself in a grungy way that will appeal to rock lovers while Dhol Yaara Dhol(Kshitij,Shilpa Rao) is a folk song with a Rajasthani tinge to it.The Dev Chanda themes are extremely good, especially theme II which has a haunting sound to it with the whistling and all.Dil Mein Jaagi sung by Mani is a delightful song tuned like it would play in a ballroom.Duniya and Nayan Tarse with Amit again are instantly catchy tracks with addictive hooks.Hiknaal and Mahi Mennu are standard Punju tracks thrown in to get the adrenaline going adn who else but Labh Janjua to mouth them!!! Shruti Pathak comes back from an exquisite Mar Jaawan to a classical Paayaliya which smacks of Chandramukhi in Devdas.Pardesi has Toshi infusing all his energies to create a crackling song while Ranjhana slows it up considerably.Ek Hulchul Si is a rock song with vocals by Joi Barua.A sad track it features Shilpa Rao  at her husky best.Saali Khushi is for the breakups  since it has the

protaganist in the depths of despair .Yahi Meri Zindagi works because of its

brilliant pacing and breezy singing. It starts off as a Western ballet and

transforms into a  mild classical.Aditi Singhs crooning add to the song

especially her repetition of the title hook had me in raptures.

Now we come to the star of the album-Emosanal Attychaar Braas Band Version.This one needs no intro as it was

and is the raging hit of 09.Lyrics here deserve the special mention earthy

and truthful.I say truthful because thats how a person expresses his anguish.

Though the track puts a smile on your face it has a certain sadness to it

which comes out well in the rock version of the same.

Overall an exceptional album put together with lot of care and attention.

It deserves praise not only for the vocals & music but also the

unconventional lyrics credited to Amithabh Bhattacharya.

It would be an attyachaaaaaar if you miss this one!!!!

My Picks-Emosanal Attyachaar,Yahi Meri Zindagi,Aankh Micholi

My Rating-Four Cheers!!!!

Lost My Music….

Gosh!!! I’m in lot of agony right now.Just now I formatted my computer and forgot to back up 3 GB of my music collection. It was a foolish thing,In fact very foolish thing (not) to do.The part which I lost contained many memorable albums(Jab We Met,Jannat,Life In a Metro etc).Have to now bring in the CDs and rip them one by one.Phew!!! that would take a lot of time.

The Grandstand(Best B-Town Songs of 2008)

Hindi music was in flux in 2008.Some MD’s plagiarised, some invented and some descended into mediocrity. Here’s a lowdown on the creme’ de la creme of bollywood songs that were most impressive.

This list is not ranked nor is it in any particular order.

Hawa Sun Hawa-Ada

Khuda Jaane-Bachna Ae Haseeno

Tere Naina-Chandni Chowk To China

Aaj Main Boond Hoon-De Taali

Jaane Kyun,Khabar Nahi-Dostana

Mar Jaawan-Fashion

Caravan-Hello

Zara Si,Judai-Jannat

Jashn e Baharaa-Jodha Akbar

Aai Paapi,Is This Love,Bakhuda-Kismat Konnection

Sapnon Se Bhare Naina,O Rahi Re,Yeh Zindagi Bhi-Luck By Chance

Haule Haule,Tujhme Rab Dikhta Hai,Dance Pe Chance-Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

Pehli Nazar Mein-Race

Teri Ore-Singh Is King

Ek Meetha Marz Dene-Welcome To Sajjanpur

Tu Hi Meri Dost,Manmohini Morey-Yuvraaj

Emosanal Attyachar,Yahi Meri Zindagi-Dev D

Pardon me but I didn’t like Ghajini and Rock On,while I liked Amit Trivedi’s Aamir it was kinda thematic and therefore no song is in the list.Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na was one score I tried hard to like but couldn’t.Except to a little extent Aditi no other songs were good enough.I detest HR so you mightn’t find Karzzzz in the list. The entire album of Dev D should have been in the list but thats not possible(it has 18 original tracks).

A Beginning

I was browsing the internet today,as usual, and suddenly out of the blue I was struck with this idea-Why not start my own blog and do my own thing? But I was also skeptical since I had enthusiastically started one before in blogspot only to let it gather dust.I typed the url of my old blog and voila it was still functioning!!!I made my way to the blogspot website and then tried as I could I couldn’t remember my old username and password. After all it was probably 3 years ago.In those three years a lot has changed.I’m now a music(read hindi) buff and an even more voracious reader of mysteries. So here I came to wordpress to begin a blog on music, musings et al…

Lets get started !!!!

PS:This may sound cliched.Nevertheless I say it,your ideas,views and criticism(even the harshest,avoid abuse) are all welcome.
